World toilet day 2020
This year the world toilet day was observed on 19th November 2020 and its purpose was to promote safe sanitation and toilet facilities to roughly 4 billion people who are living without these basic amenities. This year’s theme is sustainable sanitation and climate change. Many of you wouldn’t have estimated that billions of people would be living without such facility but to be honest, these numbers are real.
How does climate change affects?
While one might think that climate change has nothing to do
with the sanitation facility, however he/she might be extremely ignorant.
Because climate change affects water supply in one way or another it has a direct
link with sanitation. As water levels rise around the globe due to glaciers
melting and sea temperatures rising both drinking water and sanitation
facilities are in danger.
Motive of authorities
World Health Organization (WHO), Centers for disease control
and prevention (CDC), and United Nations (UN) all are working individually and
collectively to improve access to safe and clean drinking water, basic
sanitation facilities, and hand washing stations for practicing hand hygiene.
All of these measures are interlinked and are in some way or another saving
lives and improving quality of life by eradicating contagious viral and
bacterial diseases.
Lack of basic sanitation facilities has led to countless
deaths over the decades due to cross contamination. Bacteria and viruses
transfer via oro-fecal route primarily when there are no hand washing and basic
sanitation facilities helping the transmission. When people are unable to wash
their hands pathogens thrive on the skin surface and when the same person eats
or interacts with others, bacteria are transferred.
A safe sanitation system entails a clean toilet that
effectively deals with human waste by first storing it in an appropriate manner
and then transferring it to a larger tank which can then be emptied by
authorities. Safe disposal of human waste and subsequent treatment also comes
under the safe system. In order for all this to work, basic hygiene should be
observed with respect to using toilets.
Clean
toilets
On this world toilet day, rather than just advocating for
provision of better sanitation facilities everyone should also try and speak
for clean toilets too. Majorly in third world countries, there are public
toilets but they aren’t being cleaned properly as it is required to clean these
with bathroom
cleaners. This ultimately leads to a buildup of grime and microorganisms
which then cause different infectious diseases.
During such a time, when we are smack dab in the middle of a
pandemic aka COVID-19, we should be following bathroom
hygiene more than ever. This includes washing hands, cleaning surfaces with
a surface cleaner, and generally keeping the toilet as clean as possible. Using
a surface cleaner to clean different surfaces around the toilet is important
because one doesn’t know which surfaces are contaminated as we can’t see germs
with our naked eyes.
